Jaime's Ch. 8 Reflection
In Chapter 8, Taberski explains in detail about Guided Readings. It’s another way of “helping children acquire the strategies and skills they need to become fluent readers.” Children are encouraged to read independently but are also given as much assistance as needed. She explains how she does her Guided Readings from the very first month of school until the last month. I think the reason Taberski makes it seem so ‘easy’ is because she is so organized. I like her planning sheets for the different stages of the readers. The best part of that sheet is that she pre printed the strategies the children should be focusing on at the top of the page. Then that way all she has to do is look at the strategies and see what the child lacks or is meeting.
What’s great about Taberski is that she wants the child to be successful at reading. She suggests choosing books that children can read with a 92 percent to 97 percent accuracy rate. When she meets the groups for Guided Readings she always tells them why she called them and lets them know what she’s learned about their readings, how she plans to help them and what they need to do. Her explanations are never negative. She always has something good to say about their readings and then mentions what they can do to improve.
