Chelsea's Reflection (Ch. 10, On Solid Ground)
Chapter 10: Teaching Reading Strategies One-on-One was a short chapter. I guess it was short because Sharon already had talked about reading strategies, but teaching them to her students in whole group settings. This chapter focused more on teaching reading strategies to her students in a one-on-one conference. I didn't think teaching a child how to read would be so much work. There are so many differnt things that a child needs to learn to be a good reader. I guess I never really understand the real meaning of reading. I always thought of it as just picking up a book and reading the words that are written it, but that's not what it is at all. In order to be a successful reader, a child needs to know other things like understanding the text, the meaning of punctuation, and sounding out words. Reading is not just reading, it involves grammar, language, and literacy as well. It's a lot of work, but I know it will be fun. I enjoy reading, and teaching my kids how to read would be a joy. I'll especially get excited when someone from my class goes around telling everyone something good that they have learned from me or even if I said they were "cool." I thought it was so cute to read about Sharon's student Taha who went around telling everyone that Sharon said he was cool. She was really proud of him, and he was even proud of himself. Accomplishment achieved! :)
